Armed Police Rescue Tourists Stranded in Flooded Shaanxi Province

Some 200 armed police have been sent to the Qinling Mountains in northwest China's Shaanxi Province to rescue tourists stranded by flooding caused by days oftorrential rain, Huashang Daily reported Wednesday.

Some 200 armed police have been sent to the Qinling Mountains in northwest China's Shaanxi Province to rescue tourists stranded by flooding caused by days oftorrential rain, Huashang Daily reported Wednesday.

Sources with the rescue team said because sections of the No. 210 Highway leading to the mountains were seriously damaged by floods several days ago, over 1,000 tourists were stranded.

With the help of rescue workers, 300 tourists have escaped the stranded areas, and the rest are expected to leave later Wednesday.The armed police were dispatched with food and rescue materials into the mountains.

Sun Yunqing, mayor of Xi'an, capital of the province, has arrived at the foot of the mountains to command the rescue work.

The Qingling Mountains area has been struck by the worst flooding disaster in 100 years and the exact number of casualties is still unknown.

The rains caused blackouts in many counties in the province andblocked communications and traffic to the region.
