Central Authorities Concerned with Flood Fighting in NW China

The southern part of northwest China's Shannxi Province was hit by pouring rains from June 8 to 10, which caused serious mountain torrents and mud-rock flows. Leaders of the central committee of CPC and the State Council are very concerned with the flood and have instructed related departments to go all out for disaster relief.

Floods Wreak Havoc in Northwest Province
The southern part of northwest China's Shannxi Province was hit by pouring rains from June 8 to 10, which caused serious mountain torrents and mud-rock flows. Leaders of the central committee of Communist Party of China (CPC) and the State Council, China's cabinet, are very concerned with the flood and have instructed related departments to make all-out disaster relief efforts.

The Fuping County of Shaanxi Province suffered the most, with a rainfall of 489 mm on June 8.

Altogether 18 rivers in the province are surging with torrents, and the flood crests of Ziwu River and Xuhe River, both tributaries of Hanjiang River, have surpassed historical records.

By June 11, the heavy rain had ravaged more than 30 counties and 300 towns, damaging 2.5 million mu farmland, 80,000 houses, 214 km electric lines and 526 km communication cables.

What's more, 30 km national or provincial highway and 13 bridges were destroyed and the Lanzhou-Lianyungang (Longhai) Railway was once suspended.

By June 11, 150 people had been reported dead.

The local authorities is making all efforts to combat the flood.

Secretary of the provincial Party committee Li Jianguo rushed on June 10 to the most seriously affected city of Ankang, and the next afternoon saw acting provincial governor Jia Zhibang also fly by military helicopter to Fuping county.

Disaster relief materials are being transported to flooding areas.

At the instruction of the State Council, working groups from the Ministry of Civil Affairs and flood prevention and control departments also rushed to Shannxi on June 10 to cooperate the rescue work.
