Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi and Chinese Vice-Premier Wen Jiabao met Tuesday in Rome, hailing the progress in the development of relations between their two countries and pledging to further expand bilateral cooperation.

At the meeting, Wen, who is here attending the World Food Summit at the head of a Chinese delegation, spoke highly of the Sino-Italian relations, saying good progress has continued to be made in bilateral friendly cooperation since Berlusconi assumed the post of prime minister.

Moreover, the exchanges and dialogues between governmental departments of the two countries have been strengthened and bilateral trade has hit a record high, said the Chinese vice-premier. Italian enterprises had become more enthusiastic about investing in China, he added.

Conveying Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji's regards to Berlusconi and invitation for him to visit China, Wen said China is satisfied with the development of bilateral relations and attaches importance to the role Italy plays in the European Union and international affairs. The Italian prime minister said he was looking forward to visit China.

As countries capable of exerting great influences in the regions and the world, China and Italy hold similar views on many major international issues, Wen emphasized.

"Therefore, we are willing to join hands with Italy to make concerted efforts to tap the potential in the Sino-Italian cooperation, so as to promote the further growth of bilateral ties," he said.

Berlusconi said the Italy-China cooperation hold out bright prospects and that Italy appreciates the positive role China has played in regional and international affairs.

China has made great achievements in its reform and opening up drive and Italy will enhance its cooperation with China in order to boost bilateral ties, Berlusconi said.

Wen arrived here Sunday for the June 10-13 World Food Summit. He made an address at the general debate of the summit and met government leaders of some countries as well as U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan and Director-General of the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Jacques Diouf.
