China Hopes Afghan National Council Proceeds Smoothly: FM Spokesman

China sincerely hopes that Afghanistan's impending loya jirgah, or national council, will proceed smoothly and all parties will be able to elect a broad-based, transitional government which represents the interests of all ethnic groups through adequate consultations.

China sincerely hopes that Afghanistan's impending loya jirgah, or national council, will proceed smoothly and all parties will be able to elect a broad-based, transitional government which represents the interests of all ethnic groups through adequate consultations.

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Liu Jianchao made the remarks in Beijing on Tuesday, saying that to elect a broad-based transitional government not only conforms to the fundamental interests of the Afghan people, but is conducive to lasting political stability in Afghanistan and to peace and stability in the region as a whole.

It is reported that Chinese Ambassador to Afghanistan Sun Yuxi was invited to attend the meeting.
