Unemployment Registered 3.6 Percent in Chinese Urban Areas

According to statistics released by the Ministry of Labor and Social Security and the National Bureau of Statistics, by the end of last year, 5.15 million workers were laid off by the State-owned enterprises (SOE), 1.42 million fewer than in 2000.

The registered unemployment rate for urban China was 3.6 percent in 2001, latest official statistics show.

According to statistics released by the Ministry of Labor and Social Security and the National Bureau of Statistics, by the end of last year, 5.15 million workers were laid off by the State-owned enterprises (SOE), 1.42 million fewer than in 2000.

Over 90 percent of the unemployed workers are covered by the country's basic living allowance, or unemployment allowance.

About 2.27 million, or 30 percent of laid-off workers were re-employed.

The total number of people employed in urban China was 239.4 million in 2001, up 7.89 million on the previous year, according to the statistics.

The total number of people employed by companies and institutions decreased by 4.47 million in 2000 to 111.66 million, of whom the number of workers was 107.92 million, a drop of 4.67 million from 2000.

A total of 4.57 million unemployed people received retraining for employment while 240,000 were given training to help them start their own businesses.
