China will unswervingly develop friendly relations of cooperation with Sri Lanka, Chinese Defense Minister Chi Haotian said Tuesday in Beijing.
Chi, also vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission and a state councilor, made the remark during talks with Defense Minister Tilak Marapana of Sri Lanka.
Chi said that China and Sri Lanka have made steady progress in developing bilateral relations since the two countries forged diplomatic ties in 1957, and the two countries have shared common views on many major international issues.
He said China is grateful to the Sri Lankan government for the long-term support it has given China on the Taiwan, Tibet and human rights issues.
Chi expressed belief that with joint efforts from the two countries and their people, the China-Sri Lanka friendship will grow further in the new century.
Chi said relations between the two countries' armed forces are an important part of bilateral relations, and China has always taken a positive attitude towards developing sound relations between the two countries' armed forces.
He said that the Chinese armed forces are ready to further exchanges with the armed forces of Sri Lanka in various fields.
Marapana, who was on his first visit to China, said he hopes his visit will contribute to the mutual understanding and trust between the two countries.
Marapana said that Sri Lanka and China have cooperated well in various fields since 1957, and Sri Lanka appreciates the Chinese government's long-term support and help.
Prior to the talks, Chi held a welcoming ceremony for Marapana,who began his official good-will visit to China on June 9 as Chi'sguest.
