Diouf Trick Earns Senegal Berth in Round of 16
They are the new-comersat the World Cup, but they don't lack experiences and they know all about the tricks which can bring them victory.

Senegal, the World Cup debutants, benefited from forward El Hadji Diouf's trick within the penalty area. He fell down in front of the goalmouth and earned a penalty kick for his team. But TV replay indicated that the Uruguay goal-keeper Fabian Carinididn't even touch him.

Khalilou Fadiga converted the kick from the spot to put the Senegalese team 1-0 ahead at the 20th minute. The goal broke the balance of the match which saw Uruguay took a slight upper hand inthe first 15 minutes with a 55%-45% ball possession advantage.

The Uruguay team forced out, trying to get an equalizer. But that gave the Senegalese more space for counter-attacks. Pape Bouba Diouf twice beat the Uruguay goalie Fabian Carini at the 26th and 38th minutes to put Senegal 3-0 ahead.

After the break, Uruguay tried to pull one back within one minute of play through second-half substitute Richard Morales. Another second-half substitute Diego Forlan narrowed the gap to one goal with a 25-meter volley at the 69th minute.

Diego Forlan could have levelled the score at the 77th minute when he beat the Senegalese offside trap but his shot was just wide.

Earlier, Diouf also missed a clear chance when he found there was only Uruguay goalkeeper Fabian Carini between him and the goal. But his shot was punched out by Carini.

The Senegalese team then concentrated on defence and threatenedthe Uruguay defence line with occasional counter-attacks.

Their complacency costed them dearly. Alvaro Recoba levelled the score at 3-3 at the 88th minute and Richard Morales could haveput Uruguay ahead at injury time but his header just went wide.

The 3-3 draw is actually a victory for the Senegalese team as they qualify as the runners-up from the team with five points. Denmark turned out to be the group winners after beating defendingchampions France 2-0 in another Group A decider.
