Average Salary of Urban Workers Increased by 15.2% in 2001

The average salary of the country's employees working in cities and towns was 10870 yuan in 2001, an increase of 16 percent over the year before. Given the deduction of price hike, the growth rate reached 15.2 percent.

The average salary of the country's employees working in cities and towns was 10870 yuan in 2001, an increase of 16 percent over the year before. Given the deduction of price hike, the growth rate reached 15.2 percent.

According to statistics from Ministry of Labor and Social Security, the total salary of those employees came up to 1183.1 billion yuan in 2001, up 11 percent over the year before.

Employment rate continued to rise in 2001 with job structures further improved. Laid off workers' basic living was guaranteed. Till the end of 2001, unemployment rate was curbed at 3.6 percent.

Statistics indicate that by the end of 2001, rural and urban areas registered a total of 73.025 million employees, an increase of 9.4 million over previous year.

Some 36.513 million people worked in primary industry, taking up 50 percent, 16.284 million people worked in secondary industry, making up 22.3 percent, and the tertiary industry has 20.228 million employees, accounting for 27.7 percent.

Cities and towns registered 23.940 million employees, a rise of 7.89 million over the year before.

Basic living system for laid off workers of state-owned enterprises was further consolidated in the year 2001. The year registered a total of 5.15 million laid off workers, a decrease of 1.42 million over the year before and the basic living for 90 percent of the laid offs was guaranteed.

About 2.27 million laid off workers found new jobs with re-employment rate reaching 30.6 percent.
