Indonesian Councilor Shot Dead in Aceh
A member of the regional legislative council in Indonesia's westernmost province of Aceh was shot dead by two unknown gunmen, the Antara News Agency reported Tuesday.
A member of the regional legislative council in Indonesia's westernmost province of Aceh was shot dead by two unknown gunmen, the Antara News Agency reported Tuesday.
Taslim Jalil, a councilor of the Commission C, overseeing regional state budget, was shot at his house in Lhoknga subdistrict in West Aceh at around 0300 local time Tuesday (2000 GMT Monday).
A local police officer said the gunmen had used a rifle to kill Jalil. However, no group claimed responsibility for the murder.
Over the past four years, six local officials or community leaders have been killed in Aceh province.
The Indonesian government and the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) held talks in Geneva, on May 9-10, during which GAM finally accepted special autonomy offered by Jakarta for Aceh after having realized that there had been less support for an independent Aceh and also due to diplomatic pressure from Sweden and the United States.
