Tension between India and Pakistan continued to be eased as India Monday lifted ban on overflight by Pakistani aircraft.

India Monday acknowledged reduction in infiltration from Pakistan of militants across the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir.

Indian External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Nirupama Rao said,"We have reasons to believe that there is some definite tangible change in the situation."

In the first step towards de-escalation of Indo-Pak tension, India lifted ban on overflight by Pakistani aircraft, she said.

The ban was imposed on January 1 following the militants' attack on Parliament on December 13 last year.

Rao said during the last few days there have been certain announcements by Pakistan regarding curbing "infiltration" and cross-border "terrorism."

Spokesman for Pakistan's Foreign Office (FO) Aziz Ahmed Khan said Monday that the Indian government's decision to lift ban on Pakistani aircraft to overfly Indian territory is "a step in desired direction."

"We would be able to respond after receiving the details of theIndian Government's decision tomorrow," he said.

Pakistani President General Parvez Musharraf said earlier Monday that his country expects India to respond to Islamabad's measures and begin a dialogue process on the Kashmir issue.

While talking to newsmen at Chaklala Airbase before his departure for Abu Dhabi at the beginning of his visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Saudi Arabia, the president said India has to match with what Pakistan is doing and Islamabad is waiting for Indian response.

India late Saturday welcomed a Pakistani promise to block militants from entering Kashmir as a "step forward."

As fears of a war between India and Pakistan receded, share prices attracted fresh speculative buying on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) Monday and recovered smartly, pushing the Sensex sharply higher by 61.73 points to close at 3,279.49.

Dealers attributed the strong upsurge in share values to reports of easing of tension between India and Pakistan with India's decision to take steps within the next few days to defuse the military stand-off.
