The ongoing World Food Summit adoptedhere Monday a declaration urging all members of the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to recognize the urgent need to form an international alliance against hunger.

The alliance will aim to fulfill the objective of the 1996 FAO summit, which mapped out the blueprint of halving the number of then undernourished people no later than 2015, according to the declaration.

The declaration reiterated the political will and commitment pledged by FAO members to achieving food security for all and to an ongoing efforts to eradicate hunger in the world.

The average annual rate of reduction in the number of undernourished people in the world was eight million in the past. If this trend continues, the target for 2015 will not be attained, said the declaration.

The document voiced deep concern over the heavy debt burden on developing countries and its negative impact on food security.

It called on governments, international organizations, civil societies and the private sector to redouble their efforts to act as an international alliance against hunger for achieving the 1996summit goal.

It called on all governments to review their national food security policies, and urged developed countries to make concrete efforts towards the target of contributing 0.7 percent of the gross national product (GNP) as official development assistance todeveloping countries, and 0.2-0.51 percent of GNP to the least developed countries.

More than 4,000 representatives from some 180 FAO members gathered here for the four-day summit to discuss the urgent issue of food security and work out ways to eliminate hunger.
