Portugal Beat Poland 4-0 as Pauleta Scores Hat-trick

Pauleta scored a hat-trick to help Portugal beat Poland 3-0 in a crucial World Cup Group D match on Monday, the national day of Portugal which also coincided with coach Antonio Olivera's 50th birthday.

Portugal Beat Poland 4-0 as Pauleta Scores Hat-trick
Pauleta scored a hat-trick to help Portugal beat Poland 3-0 in a crucial World Cup Group D match on Monday, the national day of Portugal which also coincided with coach Antonio Olivera's 50th birthday.

In driving rain, the Bordeaux forward received a superb cross from Joao Pinto and shook off a marker in the box, firing a low right-foot shot which Polish goalkeeper Jerzu Dudek got a touch onbut couldn't keep out of the net.

At the 65th minute, Pauleta rolled with the ball into the Polish net after he connected a cross from Luis Figo who had run deep into the right flank.

Pauleta completed the hat-trick in the 77th minute when he dribbled past a Polish defender to find the net.

Second-half substitute Rui Costa put Portugal 4-0 in the 88th minute.

Pauleta almost scored his fourth goal when he rounded Dudek to send the shot to the side netting in the 85th minute.

Costa had a chance to make it 5-0 in the last minute but he took it easy in a shot, which was kicked out by a Polish defender standing on the goal line.

South Korea now top Group D with four points and the United States are second with goal differential. Portugal place third with three points with Poland last with zero.
