Arrangements for Sri Lanka's separatist Tamil Tiger rebels to get access to northern Jaffna islands for political work and for sea movements from Vanni area in the north to coastal areas are to be finalized, the state-run Daily News said on Monday.
The Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) that held talks with the Tamil rebels on these issues last Friday and Saturday in rebel- held town of Kilinochchi in the north is optimistic and a solution will be found next week.
Deputy head of SLMM Hagrup Haukland said minor technical matters that have to be finalized are expected to be completed this week.
The Tamil rebels have requested the sea movements from the north to the east to visit relatives in their own vessels.
Head of SLMM retired Norwegian Major General Trond Furuhovde said that important signs of the building of mutual confidence between the Sri Lanka government and the Tamil rebels have emerged during discussions he had on these issues. Both parties have shown significant flexibility, he added.
He said the talks were extremely constructive and the mutual confidence of both parties is what is needed for strengthening the ceasefire agreement signed between the government and Tamil rebels in February and eventually achieving a lasting peace. The country has suffered nearly two decades of ethnic war claiming over 64,000 lives.
