A ship's captain who tried to smuggle a huge number of pirated compact discs into the country has been jailed for 13 years by a court in south China's Guangdong Province.

The ruling was handed down by the Intermediate People's Court of Zhuhai City in a first-instance trial of Xu Meizhong, aged 32, who was also fined three million yuan (US$361,446).

A court investigation found that on October 1, 1999, a ship carrying 4.52 million pirated CDs, including 500,000 pornographic discs, was stopped by Gongbei Customs officers from Zhuhai, the nearest city to Macao. But Xu, of Huidong County, Guangdong, who was captain of the ship, jumped into the sea and escaped.

Anti-smuggling police with Gongbei Customs found and detained Xu late last year. Zhuhai People's Procuratorate began a prosecution of Xu at the Intermediate People's Court of Zhuhai five months ago.

The court found Xu guilty of smuggling as he deliberately violated customs regulations, dodged customs supervision by attempting to evade 2.98 million yuan (US$359,036) in tariffs and shipped cargo banned by the state in Chinese waters.
