The government and the Royal Thai Army have consistent policy on addressing problems along the Thai-Myanmar border, the Thai News Agency Saturday quoted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra as saying.

Thaksin confirmed on Saturday that there was no difference between the government and the Royal Thai Army's policy on tackling the Thai-Myanmar border problems as speculated by some parties, but the government and the Royal Thai Army's policy had, instead, gone through the same direction.

"This includes the same idea that a buffer state along the border should be eliminated, as it is considered a way to prevent border conflicts," he added.

The Premier said that he considered ending Thai-Myanmar border conflicts permanently in the long run needs an agreed approach to successfully solve the problems of armed ethnic groups along the border, which should also take sound relationship between Bangkok and Rangoon into account.

Non interference of Myanmar's internal affairs by non-governmental organizations (NGOs) through humanitarian assistance given to minority groups along the border would be another way to help end the border conflicts, as it would not cause misunderstanding and would allow Rangoon to settle internal problems and pursue reconciliation policy itself, noted the Thai leader.

The Thai leader also vowed to bring three gunmen who brutally opened fire on a school pick-up in Ratchaburi province last Tuesday into justice as soonest as possible.

He said that all parties were working hard to hunt for the three assailants.

The three gunmen, emerging from hillsides along the road, opened fire on a school pick-up of Ban Ka Vittaya School, killing three students and injuring 14 others, two of whom are now still in serious conditions.
