Pyongyang Insists on Equality with US in Dialogue
The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) accused the United States on Friday of delaying bilateral talks, and said the resumption of DPRK-U.S. dialogue must be based on equality.
"A true dialogue is possible only when the United States respects its dialogue partner and deals with it on an equal footing," a foreign ministry spokesman said when talking about thedelayed visit by U.S. special envoy Jack Pritchard, the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported.
The spokesman said Washington had proposed to restart dialogue with Pyongyang, but has not sent Pritchard here since late last year. Pyongyang had agreed in April to accept Pritchard's visit for what would be the first substantive dialogue with the DPRK under the administration of George W. Bush, who has labeled the country part of an "axis of evil."
The White House made a statement on Tuesday that the proposed visit was delayed because the Bush administration's polity toward the DPRK has not been formulated, the spokesman said.
Some U.S. media said Washington wants to see the DPRK's true attitude toward the issue of cutting armed forces and arms exports,he added.
