Joint Patrolling Proposal Evolutionary: Indian FM

Indian External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh Friday said India's proposal for joint patrolling with Pakistan along the Line of Control (LoC) was "evolutionary" and that one should work towards it to solve the problem of infiltration in Jammu and Kashmir.

Speaking to reporters after holding talks with visiting U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage on the current Indo-Pak tension and other issues, Singh said Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee has suggested the joint patrolling to check infiltration from across the border.

"It is not as if joint patrolling will be established tomorrow. It is an answer to a problem. It is evolutionary and that is why one should work towards it," said Singh.

Armitage, who arrived here from Islamabad Friday morning, said he was able to relate to Singh the "tone and tenor" of the content of the discussion he had with Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf.

Armitage described his talks with Singh as "frank and full," saying he had come here in search of peace.
