China, ASEAN Discuss Free Trade Region Issues

The First China-ASEAN Seminar on Trade, Investment and Development Cooperation opened in Kunming, the capital city of southwest China's Yunnan Province, on Thursday, with over 400 government officials, academic and corporate representatives from China and the 10 ASEAN countries attending.

The First China-ASEAN Seminar on Trade, Investment and Development Cooperation opened in Kunming, the capital city of southwest China's Yunnan Province, on Thursday, with over 400 government officials, academic and corporate representatives from China and the 10 ASEAN countries attending.

During the two-day seminar, participants will discuss issues concerning economic and trade cooperation between China and ASEAN, the establishment of a China-ASEAN free trade region, as well as key issues and cooperation.

Addressing the opening ceremony, Vice-Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference Bai Lichen said that regional cooperation was an important trend of global economic development. China-ASEAN should seize this opportunity, make mutual investments, and set up a China-ASEAN free trade region, which would effectively strengthen the economies of the nations involved.

Vietnamese Minister of Trade Vu Khoan, Chinese Vice-Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation Zhou Keren and trade officials from Laos, Brunei, Singapore and the ASEAN Secretariat also made remarks at the opening ceremony.
