Chinese Surgeons Separate Siamese Twins

Chinese surgeons in an eight-hour operation have successfully separated 26-day-old Siamese twins, who were joined at the chest and abdomen.

Chinese surgeons in an eight-hour operation have successfully separated 26-day-old Siamese twins, who were joined at the chest and abdomen.

The brothers survived the operation on May 26 and are in stable condition at the Children's Hospital in Nanjing, capital of east China's Jiangsu Province.

The babies were joined at the liver, breastbone and diaphragm with a common pericardium.

The Siamese twins are from east China's Anhui Province and were born on April 30.

The incidence of Siamese twins is one per 100,000, and the survival rate is one per 200,000.

According to statistics, Chinese doctors have conducted a dozen operations on Siamese twins and nearly 200 such operations have been reported worldwide with at least three quarters being successful.
