Taiwan's Kuomintang (KMT) Chairman Lien Chan urged Taiwan authorities to comply with the will of the public and immediately open direct air and shipping links when addressing the meeting of KMT's central standing committee.

Lien said all surveys conducted by Taiwan media and relevant research departments show that up to 70 percent Taiwan residents favour cross-straits direct air and shipping links.

Taiwan authorities have established the off-shore trans-shipment center for 6 years and opened the pilot "three direct links" with Xiamen, Mazu and Mawei for more than one year, which have both proven secure.

However, direct links have not be opened until now, he said.

Taiwan's development relies on direct links
Taiwan is supposed to advance towards the "world operating center" to push economic development and be in line with two trends of the world -- integration with the world economy and globalization of the enterprise operation.

The realization of all of those relies on the direct air and shipping links, Lien said.

Taiwan authorities shouldn't place the direct links only as a trick to woo votes, which is driving their commitments far away from the intended goal, he said.

KMT legislators and the People First Party (PTP) are trying to revise the regulations on the relations across the Taiwan straits to remove obstacles for direct links.

Lien Chan and Soong Chu-yu, chairman of the PTP, have reached a consensus on completing the revision as soon as possible at their yesterday meeting for the cooperation between the two parties.
