Toyota Motor Corp. and China FAW Group Corp. (FAW) are negotiating to jointly build a luxury car plant in China, Kyodo News reported Thursday.
The start of production is slated for 2005 under the prospective alliance between the two giant automakers in their countries.
The plant would be built either in Tianjin, where a number of Toyota's auto-part making subsidiaries are operating, or Changchun, where FAW has a production facility.
The two automakers would first work on the joint production of a luxury car modeled after Toyota's Crown, with an initial production target of 50,000 units a year.
The projected joint venture would also consider producing a successor model to FAW's high-end Hong Qi car for sale under FAW's brand name and a large sport utility vehicle at the plant.
In October, Toyota will start producing a compact car modeled on its Vitz car at a joint venture, which was set up by Toyota and Tianjin Automotive Industry Corp. in June 2000.
