The Third China Textile & Apparel Trade Show opened Wednesday with nearly 200 enterprises from across the most populous country in the world.

Newly-designed products are displayed in the trade show, held at the Jacob Javits Convention Center, New York City.

Organized jointly by the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, Sub-Council of Textile Industry (CCPIT TEX) and China's National Textile Industry Council, the exhibition is the first such kind since China entered the World Trade Organization last year.

"This show provides American buyers with a unique opportunity to meet their counterparts from China for the first time since the trade relationship between the two countries attained this historic standing," said Zhang Yankai, vice chairman of CCPIT TEX.

In the three-day event, manufacturers will display items including women's, men's and children's wear, garment fabrics, fashion accessories, home textiles and cotton yarns.

"The demand in the United States for Chinese textiles, apparel and home furnishings continues to be on the rise," said Richard Gould of Specialty Trade Show. "Goods produced in China offer ever-increasing value by combining cutting-edge technology with superior workmanship."

The U.S is the second largest import market for Chinese textile products. In 2001, Sino-U.S. textile and apparel trade reached 6.3 billion U.S. dollars, accounting for nearly one tenth of China's total textile imports and exports.
