Eight cities have formally applied to compete for the right to host the 2010 Winter Olympics, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) confirmed in Lausanne on Tuesday.
The competitors bidding to host the 2010 event are Andorra, Bern in Switzerland, Harbin in China, Jaca in Spain, Pyeongchang in South Korea, Salzburg in Austria, the Canadian city of Vancouver and Sarajevo, with the Bosnian city seeking to stage the Games for the second time.
The candidates will be whittled down by late August on the basis of their written replies to questions about key issues such as sporting facilities, telecommunications, accommodation, transport, finance and environmental conditions.
The IOC said it would announce the final list of candidate cities after a meeting of a working group in Lausanne on August 28 and 29.
The host city is due to be chosen at the IOC's meeting in July 2003 in Prague.
