S.Lankan Tamil Rebel Chief Negotiator to Seek European Support for Peace Process

The Sri Lanka separatist Tamil Tiger rebels' chief negotiator Anton Balasingham is to visit European countries to seek support for their peace effort, The Island newspaper said on Wednesday.

The Sri Lanka separatist Tamil Tiger rebels' chief negotiator Anton Balasingham is to visit European countries to seek support for their peace effort, The Island newspaper said on Wednesday.

During his visit to European countries, Balasingham is to meet government leaders and senior officials in these countries and brief them on the progress of the Norwegian-brokered peace process and the stand of the Tamil community.

Last week, Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe made a similar visit to European countries.

Balasingham visited Switzerland but failed to meet the Norwegian delegation led by Deputy Foreign Minister Vidar Helgesen who heads the mediators in London.

The Tamil rebels are calling for their de-proscription before peace talks are held in Thailand in late June or early July. However, the government insists that de-proscription should be considered only after a date is fixed for the talks.

Wickremesinghe also insists that core issues should be first resolved during the forthcoming talks while the rebels want the talks to be focused on the granting of an interim administration in the north and east of the country.
