Chinese President Jiang Zemin said Tuesday in Almaty that only through negotiations can a just and reasonable resolution be found for the disputes between Pakistan and India.

About CICA
The CICA was first proposed by Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev at the 47th U.N. General Assembly in 1992 for establishing a regional forum aimed at increasing security and cooperation in Asia.

The 16 CICA member states are Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, China, Egypt, India, Iran, Israel, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Palestine, Tajikistan, Turkey and Uzbekistan.

Jiang made the remarks during a meeting with Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf. Both presidents are attending the first summit meeting of the member states of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA) that closed on Tuesday in Almaty, capital of Kazakhstan.

Jiang said China appreciates and supports President Musharraf's repeated position that Pakistan will, proceeding from its own national interests, fight against terrorism and its internal religious extremist factors.

Jiang said China supports the Pakistani government's policy of restraint and its efforts to ease tension with India.

He stressed that a relaxation of tension between Pakistan and India will serve the interests of both countries and will also be helpful to peace and stability in South Asia.

Musharraf briefed Jiang on Pakistan's views and its policy on the current situation in South Asia. He stressed that Pakistan wants peace and opposes war, and will never initiate war. Pakistan hopes to have dialogue and negotiations with India.

Jiang told Musharraf that China values its friendly relations with Pakistan, and will make greater efforts to develop and strengthen the full-range cooperative relations between the two countries.

Musharraf said he believes Pakistan-China relations will develop further in the new century.
