Sri Lanka's Tamil minority legislators on Tuesday called upon the government to fully implement the truce agreement signed with separatist Tamil Tiger rebels who have charged that certain obligations on the part of the government have not been fulfilled.
Sri Lanka's Tamil minority legislators on Tuesday called upon the government to fully implement the truce agreement signed with separatist Tamil Tiger rebels who have charged that certain obligations on the part of the government have not been fulfilled.
Rajavayothi Sampanthan, the senior Tamil legislator told Parliament that the security forces battling the Tamil rebels in the north and east of the country have not vacated the places of religious worship and schools in violation of the truce agreement signed in February.
The government of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and the rebel leader Velupillai Prabhakaran signed the truce agreement brokered by the Norwegian peace facilitators.
Sampanthan added that the international community must not be blind in helping Sri Lanka end its nearly two decade armed conflict that has claimed over 64,000 lives.
"The international community should not take any step that willprejudice the effort of finding a solution to ensure the legitimate rights of the Tamil people,"Sampanthan told Parliament.
In respond to Sampanthan's criticism, Defense Minister Tilak Marapone said that the armed forces have been evacuated from most religious and public places as provided for in the truce agreement.
