Chinese Vice-Premier Meets Israeli Deputy Prime Minister
Chinese Vice-Premier Qian Qichen said Tuesday in Almaty that China hopes all the relevant parties in theMiddle East can coordinate with the peace-promotion efforts of the international community and gradually ease the tension between Israel and the Palestinians.

Qian made the remarks during a meeting with Natan Sharansky, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Housing and Construction of Israel, on the sidelines of the first summit meeting of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia(CICA). Sharansky is the head of the Israeli delegation to the summit.
Chinese President Jiang Zemin and Russian President Vladimir Putin, together with leaders and representatives of 14 other member countries of the CICA, participated in the summit meeting, which started here in the morning.
Qian explained to Sharansky China's position on the Middle East situation, especially on the conflicts between Israel and thePalestinians. He said the situation in the Middle East is quite worrisome. He urged all the relevant parties to take concrete actions to gradually ease the tension between Israel and the Palestinians.
China, as a permanent member of the Security Council of the United Nations, will continue to make efforts for an early peaceful settlement of the Middle East issue, he said.
