China, Russia Agree to Continue Efforts to Ease Tension in South Asia
China and Russia share common interests in maintaining peace and stability in South Asia and thetwo countries will continue to make efforts to ease tension there,foreign ministers of the two countries agreed Tuesday in Almaty.

Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan and his Russian counterpart, Igor Ivanov, held talks Tuesday morning on the sidelines of the first summit meeting of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA).
Chinese President Jiang Zemin and Russian President Vladimir Putin, together with leaders and representatives of the other 14 CICA member countries, participated in the summit meeting, which started here on Tuesday morning.
The two foreign ministers exchanged views on China-Russia relations, the current summit meeting, the upcoming summit meetingof the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in St. Petersburg, Russia,and the situation in South Asia.
Describing the upcoming meetings between Jiang and Putin and other high-level exchanges between the two countries in the secondhalf of the year as significant to the further development of bilateral ties, the foreign ministers said the two countries will make good preparations to ensure that substantial results will be achieved from those meetings and exchanges.
