Costa Rica beat World Cup first timers China 2-0 on two second-half goals within four minutes in their Group C game on Tuesday in Kwangju.
Ronald Gomez blasted home a rebounder in the 61st minute after Paulo Wanchope's shot was blocked in the box by Chinese defender Xu Yunlong.
Four minutes later, defender Mauricio Wright put Costa Rica 2-0 ahead as he surged in at the near post to head Gomez's kick from a close range.
The match put China coach Bora Milutinovic against his student Alexandre Guimaraes, head coach of Costa Rica. The Yugoslav led the Costa Ricans including Guimaraes to soccer's preimer event for the first time in 1990.
Milutinovic has led five teams in the World Cup finals and had never lost his World Cup opening matches before this game.
