The Israeli Knesset (parliament) plenum confirmed Monday the return to the cabinet of four Shas ministers who were fired two weeks ago by Prime Minister Ariel Sharon after they abstained during a vote on the emergency economic plan.
Fifty-four Knesset members supported the proposal to allow the Shas ministers to return, with 23 voting against and six abstaining. The four ministers, Eli Yishai, Shlomo Benizri, Nissim Dahan and Asher Ohana, pledged their allegiance from the Knesset podium.
After the ultra-orthodox party's return, the government would again have a majority of 77 seats, up from 60, in the 120-seat Knesset.
Sharon also issued in the day an ultimatum to United Torah Judaism (UTJ) party, which also opposed the emergency economic plan.
He threatened the party that if UTJ does not support the economic plan, he would not reinstate the party's deputy ministers, who were fired when they voted against the plan two weeks ago.
