Officials of the South Korean Ministry of Information and Communication (MOIC) and five private-sector firms, including SK Telecom and Samsung Electronics, are due to visit DPRK to move ahead with a project to launch mobile telecommunications service there on CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) technology.

A high-ranking MOIC official made this announcement Monday and said that, to help Pyongyang with the off-line service, several ministry officials, along with executives of five firms, will be visiting DPRK on June 4 through 7.

The same official said DPRK is expected to make its final decision on the choice of mobile service technologies during the South Korean delegation's visit, adding the trip was delayed due to the two Koreas' pending investment-guarantee pact.

Government sources said that the DPRK authorities are likely to go for the CDMA service for its capital Pyongyang region and Rajin-Sunbong free trade zone.

DPRK is set to start the service in Pyongyang first, sources said, adding that the South Korean firms will be setting up a 50:50 joint venture with DPRK firms so that the cellular service could debut early next year.

Sources also said that a Thai firm has won a DPRK government license to offer mobile service in the Rajin-Sunbong region on a GSM system, which is widely used in Europe, starting from October this year.
