A late controversial penalty by striker Rivaldo gave Brazil a hard-earned 2-1 win over Turkey in their opening World Cup Group C match Monday in Ulsan.

The four-time World Cup champions, who were desperately seeking a winner after an entirely second-half stormy attacks, were awarded a spot kick four minutes from time after substitute Luizao was brought down by Alpay Ozalan right on the edge of the penalty box. Ozalan was shown a red card for the offence.

"We deserved one point, but we couldn't get that because of other reasons." Turkish coach Senol Gunes said at the post-match press conference, apparently referring to the late penalty decision.

Rivaldo was delighted about the victory though showing a little disappointment at Brazil's performance in the first half.

"We had a strong will to win the game. I regret that we couldn't have sealed our victory in the first half, but I am relieved that we came from behind to win the match."

"We came here with pride and we played the game with pride...we had a great effort but we couldn't get what we deserved". "There is an injustice in the result, I have to say that, an injustice," he added.

In a dramatic match played out before the 40,000 crowd at the Ulsan Munsu Stadium, the highly vaunted striking trio of Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho lived up to their expectations as they provided most energy in the Brazilian attacks.

But It was the Turks who broke the deadlock in injury time of the first half. Hasan Sas latched onto an overhead pass from midfielder Yildiray Basturk to give Turkey a lead which they barely deserved in terms of possession and attacks.

Only four minutes into the second half, Ronaldo netted a pinpoint left-wing cross from Rivaldo for the equalizer.

Brazil could have won the game but Rivaldo's header was disallowed for offside in the 63rd minute.

The four-time champions, playing without first-choice midfielder Emerson who injured his shouder in yesterday's training session, went into the match forcefully and dominated the midfield with ease.

Brazil wasted a golden chance in the 28th minute. Ronaldo laid the ball into the path of Paulista Juninho only to see the diminutive midfielder skew his shot wide of goal.

Earlier, Brazil almost committed an own goal as a Tugay Kerimoglu shot was miscued slightly over the crossbar by midfielder Silva Gilberto after Turkey failed to convert a free-kick.

The South Americans went close to scoring again six minutes before halftime. Ronaldo spurted down on the left wing before his neat cross found Rivaldo in the front of goal. But the Barcelona star's powerful header was saved by goalkeeper Rustu Recber.

The nearest Turkey came was in the 36th minute when Tugay Kerimoglu unleashed a fine long shot which went straight into the arms of goalie Marcos.

After the score was leveled at 1-1, the match turned into an one-sided play by the skillful Brazilians.

The Turks, who reached their first World Cup finals for 48 years, could only stay in their own half field and did little to threaten the opponents.

In the stoppage time, Hakan Unsal was also sent off for a deliberate offence by kicking the ball straight at Rivaldo.
