Croatian defender Boris Zivkovic became the first player to be expelled at the World Cup finals as Mexico nipped Croatia in a dull Group G match Monday in Niigata, Japan.

Croatia didn't show the killing instinct which pushed them to the 1998 World Cup semifinals. As the match went on, the aging Croatians led by 34-year-old Davor Suker and 32-year-old Alen Boksic puffed and blew and were overwhelmed by aggressive Mexicans.

After a boring first half, Mexico broke the deadlock as striker Cuauhtemoc Blanco converted a penalty won by himself at the 60th minute.

Zivkovic tackled down Blanco inside the box in the 59th minute.

Chinese referee Lu Jun, hailed as one of the best referees in Asia, overacted by issuing a red card to Zivkovic.
