Tibet issued a set of two commemorative envelopes at the foot of Mount Kangrinboqe recently to mark the 2002 Ngari Tourist Festival being held in the region.

A total of 2,002 commemorative envelopes have been issued, withone featuring Mount Kangrinboqe and the other the ancient Tibetan Kingdom of Guge.

A temporary post office was set up for the convenience of visitors who wished to send commemorative envelopes to their relatives and friends.

Zhou Xiurong, the post office's sole employee, said, "I have been kept busy since the post office opened at 09:30 a.m. Many Buddhists trekked a long way, I will not let them down."

Buddhist monks traditionally circle Mount Kangrinboqe in the Year of the Horse in the Tibetan Calendar and circle the holy LakeNamco in the Year of the Sheep.

Large crowds of Buddhists travel a long way from southeast Asian countries and other parts of the world to walk around the 6,714-meter-high Mount Kangrinboqe, which they consider a holy mountain. They believe all sins they have committed will be wiped out if they do this during the Year of the Horse.

This year's pilgrimage has drawn more people than ever before, according to local residents.
