South Africa's First Goal Not Own Goal, FIFA
South Africa's first goal in their 2- 2 draw against Paraguay on Sunday was not an own goal and should be given to South Africa's Teboho Mokoena instead, FIFA said Monday.
South Africa's first goal in their 2- 2 draw against Paraguay on Sunday was not an own goal and should be given to South Africa's Teboho Mokoena instead, FIFA said Monday.
Paraguayan defender Estanislao Struway deflected a long range shot from Mokoena past his goalkeeper, Ricardo Tavarelli, in the 63rd minute of the game.
The Busan stadium scoreboard, as well as FIFA's initial reports, had both described the goal as an own goal.
But FIFA spokesman Keith Cooper said this was a mistake.
Cooper said FIFA regulations clearly state that minor deflections should not be considered as own goals.
Cooper added a FIFA technical study team headed by Carlos Alberto Parreira, a 1994 World Cup winner as coach of Brazil, "was adamant that this was a goal, not an own goal."
No own goals had been recorded in the World Cup's first eight games, Cooper said.
