Civilian flights to northern Sri Lanka resumed on Monday with the easing of tensions in the country's ethnic war following a ceasefire between government troops and separatist Tamil Tiger rebels last December, officials said.
A newly floated private company Expo Aviation Ltd. commenced its first revenue flight from Ratmalana in the capital of Colombo to Palaly in northern Jaffna peninsula Monday. They will be using Russian IL-18 airplanes for the initially once a day flight which can accommodate 87 passengers.
Flight frequency will be increased according to passenger demand for this 55 minute flight.
Earlier Helitours operated by the Sri Lanka Air force had the monopoly of these flights.
Director General of Civil Aviation Department Lal Liyanarachchi said two more companies have applied to operate domestic flights between Ratmalana and Palaly and approval will be granted once the companies have their planes.
