Malaysia to Evacuate Dependents of Diplomats in India, Pakistan
All dependents of Malaysian diplomats and non-essential staff in both India and Pakistan will be advised to return to Malaysia as soon as possible in view of the worsening conflict in the sub-continent, Foreign Minister Syed Hamid said Sunday.
All dependents of Malaysian diplomats and non-essential staff in both India and Pakistan will be advised to return to Malaysia as soon as possible in view of the worsening conflict in the sub-continent, Foreign Minister Syed Hamid said Sunday.
Syed Hamid said in a press statement issued here the decision was made as an immediate measure and in line with action already taken by other countries.
The United States, Britain and several other Western nations had flown home diplomats and their families from India and Pakistan, and urged tens of thousands of their citizens to leave.
The minister also said that the Malaysian High Commissions in New Delhi and Islamabad had been instructed to reactivate their respective contingency plans for the eventual evacuation of Malaysians.
"There is considerable fear and anxiety that the deteriorating situation, if not immediately arrested, will not only lead to the conventional war but a more serious military confrontation with severe consequences to both countries and the region," he said.
He said Malaysia was following with great concern the escalating tension in the sub-continent.
According to press reports reaching here, India last week threatened to close Pakistan's diplomatic mission if Islamabad failed to address its concerns over Islamic militants fighting NewDelhi's rule in disputed Kashmir area.
India expelled Pakistan's High Commissioner last month and bothcountries halved their diplomatic representation as ties rapidly deteriorated after a deadly December attack on India's parliament that New Delhi blamed on Pakistan-based militants.
Tensions heightened further after more than 30 people died in an attack on an Indian army base in Kashmir last month that India again blamed on Pakistan-based Islamic militants.
