Member States Support EU Policies Against U.S. Steel Measures

Member states of the European Union (EU) fully support the bloc's policies against the U.S. protectionist steel measures which took effect on March 20, an EU trade spokesman said Friday.
"Member states fully support us in seeking a satisfactory offer of compensation and product exclusions (from the U.S. measures) which they expect the United States to put forward thereby
obviating the need to apply countermeasures in the short term," Anthony Gooch said in a press release.
He said the EU expected the United States to cooperate in the rapid establishment of a World Trade Organization (WTO) panel to rule on the legality of the U.S. measures, a decision that will be confirmed in Geneva next Monday.
"In order to preserve EU's rights and defend its interests in the WTO, the EU would, by June 18, suspend concessions vis-a-vis the U.S. on the products in the two lists submitted to the WTO in mid-May," he added. "This will free us to apply short-term countermeasures should a satisfactory U.S. offer is not coming."
The transatlantic trade dispute was sparked by the U.S. government's imposition of tariffs of up to 30 percent on most of imported steel. The EU denounced it a violation of WTO rules and
threatened to retaliate if the United States refuses to compensate or remove the measures.
