A helicopter crashed Thursday while attempting to rescue six climbers who fell into an icy crevasse near the top of Mount Hood in western U.S. state of Oregon.
Television footage showed that the chopper, an Air Force Reserve Pave Hawk, twirled out of control and crashed onto the mountainside.
One of the four people on board the helicopter was in critical condition after the crash, local media reports said.
The rescuers had been trying to reach three climbers who died and six others who were trapped in a crevasse after they fell while on a climbing expedition earlier in the day.
The climbers were about 240 meters from the summit of Mt. Hood, which is 3,423 meters high and about 80 kilometers of east of Portland, Oregon.
The accident occurred one day after one man and two women died on Mount Rainier, about 60 kilometers away in Washington state. The fourth member of the climbing team survived.
