Chinese President Jiang Zemin on Tuesday encouraged scientists to make greater scientific innovations to boost the country's advanced productivity and cultural development.
Jiang made the remarks when delivering a speech to 1,200 academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering. The academicians were here attending the two academies' conferences, respectively, that both opened Tuesday.
President Jiang Zemin reiterated that advanced science and technology are essential to the country's economic development and stressed technological innovation, especially in the new frontiers of science, as a key to continuing the momentum of the country's science industry.
Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, Premier Zhu Rongji, Vice-President Hu Jintao and senior official Wei Jianxing also attended the opening meetings.
The president said that scientific innovation is a strong force for realizing and protecting the interests of the people.
Jiang urged the scientists to fully understand the great impact that science and technology have on the overall national strength, social and economic structure, and the people's interests.
Jiang called on them to maintain lofty aspirations and great ideals, make scientific innovations in accordance with the development needs of the nation, contribute to spreading scientific knowledge and advocating advanced culture, and create a favorable environment for bringing up young talented people.
Jiang, on behalf the central government, spoke highly of the importance of scientists' continuous creative research work and encouraged them to make "bolder'' efforts to achieve "greater'' breakthroughs in their academic fields.
The Chinese Government will as always give priority to science and technology advancement to achieve the goal of all-round modernization and sustainable development, according to Jiang.
Jiang also requested scientists to spare no efforts in those strategic and basic areas concerning the country's economic and social development, as well as national security.
Lu Yongxiang, president of CAS, echoed Jiang's remarks Tuesday urging his fellow academicians to closely follow the latest world trends and "wisely'' choose their academic areas so as to make more breakthroughs.
According to Lu, Chinese scientists have made remarkable advances in life sciences, information technology, space technology and nano-technology in the past two years.
Furthermore, Jiang noted technological achievements should contribute to the economy more efficiently under the market economy.
Academicians were also urged to play a bigger role in popularizing science knowledge at home and carrying out international academic exchanges and co-operation.
Young scientists were honoured as the hope of the country's science industry at the conference.
Jiang urged senior academicians to offer more guidance to their students to prepare for the long-term rapid development of the country's science industry.
"It is the greatest honour for senior scientists to have trained a group of talented students who make even greater contributions than their teachers,'' said Jiang.
Governments of all levels should also give more opportunities to young researchers and engineers and encourage the enterprising spirit in research work, according to Jiang.
Many other senior officials from various departments of the central government Tuesday also attended the scientists' gathering and heard the advice and suggestions offered by the academicians at the conferences.
