Chinese Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation Shi Guangsheng said Tuesday in Shanghai that China actively supports members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in joining the World Trade Organization.

Shi made the remarks during a meeting with ministers and vice-ministers from the other five SCO members: Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. The meeting marks the beginning of the meeting mechanism of trade ministers of the SCO.

Except for China and Kyrgyzstan, who are already members, the remaining four countries are in negotiations for entry into the WTO.

"China, as a WTO member, will assert active influence for the four SCO members to enter into the WTO," Shi said in a speech.

Shi also proposed that in economic cooperation and trade among members of the SCO, each country should copy and learn from the principles of the WTO. He named the principles of non-discrimination, most-favored trading nations, national treatment, and opening of markets, among others.

"As we are trying to improve our market economic system, these principles will help us improve our trade and investment environment, and therefore sharpen our competitive edge," Shi said.
