China to Invest Heavily in Environmental Protection
China plans to invest 300 billion yuan in environmental development and protection in the next 10 years, said Zhai Qing at the ongoing China Beijing International High-tech Expo.

The funds will be mainly used to turn farmland into forest and grassland, curb desertification in areas around Beijing, the national capital, and protect natural forests, the official said.
According to the government plan, between 2000 and 2010, China will invest 96.2 billion yuan in protecting natural forests, increasing the acreage of forests to 197.94 million ha., up by 25 percent, and raising the coverage of forests to 20 percent.
To bring the deserts around the capital city under control, 55.64 billion yuan will be spent to deal with an area of 458,000 sq.km. and relocate 180,000 affected people.
The official estimated that in the next 10 years, China's environmental industry is expected to grow by 15 percent annually.
