Hu Jintao Urges Dedication for Western Development
During an inspection tour of northwest China's Qinghai Province, China's Vice-President Hu Jintao urged committees of the Chinese Communist Party and governments at various levels in the western regions to work with high morale, and steadfastly push forward the local social and economic development.

"The implementation of the Western Development Strategy has brought unprecedented opportunities and a strong impetus for development in China's western regions," said Hu. "They should grasp the opportunities and lead the local people to push local social and economic development to a new height," he added.
The tour, which ran from May 22 to 27, took the vice-president to grassland pastures, farm fields, construction sites, factory workshops, and rural and urban households in Qinghai.

The fixed asset investment growth rate for January-October last year for China's western regions has hit 23 percent, 5.6 percent higher than the country's average.

Western Development Program Pays Off
The gross domestic product (GDP) of 12 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities in western China increased by 8.7 percent in the first half of this year thanks to China's drive to accelerate western development.
Construction of 10 key projects began in western China last year at a combined cost of 20 billion yuan. More projects were begun to be built this year, which will cost about 300 billion yuan. >>details
