Sudan welcomes efforts made by regional countries and the international community at large to achieve peace and stability in Sudan, a Sudanese diplomat said Monday in Cairo.

Hassan Abd-albaki, charge d'affaires of the Sudanese Embassy in Cairo, made it clear in an interview with Xinhua, when asked about a meeting between Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher and British envoy on Sudan Alan Goulty on Tuesday.

"I believe that during the meeting, Maher will assure that the only solution to the Sudanese problem is to maintain Sudan's unification," Abd-albaki said.

"All the efforts and initiatives have not succeeded so far because of an attitude adopted by the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA)," he said.

The Sudanese Islamic government forces have been fighting with the SPLA, which has been struggling for greater autonomy for the predominantly Christians and animists of the south since 1983.

Last year, Egypt and Libya put forth a new reconciliation plan for Sudan, calling for resuming Sudanese peace process, forming a transitional cabinet of all political forces, specifying the date and arrangements of new general elections, and immediately ceasing all forms of hostilities.

Moreover, the Eastern African Inter-Governmental Authority for Development (IGAD) raised a proposal on self-determination in the south in 1993.

The Sudanese government has recently accepted an overture raised by Kenya, a member of the IGAD, on starting a new round of negotiations in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi on June 10.
