At least 21 people were killed in southern Peru when a truck carrying dozens of people and farm produce crashed into a house and rolled over, a local fire chief said.

The truck's brakes failed on a downhill section of highway on the outskirts of Tacna in southern Peru on Sunday night. The driver struggled for 300 yards to try to slow the truck before he lost control of it, said Tacna fire chief Gonzalo Lostanau.

Many of those killed, including small children wearing Andean ponchos, were crushed beneath the truck and its cargo, Lostanau said.

At least 40 other people, including the truck's driver were rushed to a hospital for emergency treatment, he said.

All of the dead and injured were believed to have been riding in the truck, Lostanau said. No one in the house was hurt, he said.

The truck's occupants had gone to buy corn, potatoes and other produce at a country fair in a village northeast of Tacna and were returning home at the time of the crash.
