Meeting Commemorates Zheng Chenggong Recovering Taiwan

A ceremony was held Sunday in Nan'an, East China's Fujian Province, to commemorate the 340th anniversary of China's recovery of Taiwan from the hands of Dutch aggressors by Zheng Chenggong, a national hero in China's history.

More than 8,000 people, including senior government officials, descendants of Zheng Chenggong from across the world and scholars attended the event at the birthplace of Zheng.

"This is an important event in the exchanges across the Taiwan Straits. It helps to promote Zheng's great patriotism, fight advocates of 'Taiwan's Independence' and advance relations across the Straits," said Wang Fuqing, deputy director of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council.

For his recovery of Taiwan, Zheng Chenggong is held in high esteem in the minds of people across the Straits. There are memorial halls for Zheng Chenggong in Xiamen and Nan'an of Fujian Province, while there are 300-strong temples in Taiwan in his honor.

Recovery of Taiwan by Zheng Chenggong

Zheng Chenggong is known as a great national hero of China for his recovering Taiwan Island from Netherlands invaders in 17 century.

At that time, China was controlled by late Ming Dynasty which was replaced by Qing Dynasty before long. At the same time, Netherlands colonist occupied Taiwan with force, the territory of China.

21 years old Zheng Chenggong gathered Taiwan people to fight against Netherlands colonists hardly since 1661. Through his hard fighting, the colonists surrendered without any condition. Thus 38 years colonial control ended. Taiwan came back to motherland, and Zheng Chenggong's name and great contribution was recorded in Chinese history book and passed down generation by generation.
