Thirty-one bodies from a crashed China Airlines (CAL) plane of Taiwan have been retrieved, according to TVBS news reports reaching Taipei Sunday.

The remains of the victims were housed in a make-shift mortuary in a military stadium near the Makung airport to be identified by their relatives.

The relatives have been asked to submit DNA samples and help identify the bodies.

The Boeing 747-200 plane carrying 225 passengers and crew crashed into the sea around 3:30 p.m. Saturday en route from Taipei to Hong Kong.

There were little hope for surviving the disaster given the high altitude when the plane started plunging.

The round-the-clock rescue and search work are continuing on the spot.
