Two helicopters and a group of rescue workers sent by the Hong Kong Civil Aviation Department to China Airlines plane crash site had to return on their half way because of refusal from Taiwan, a senior aviation official said Sunday.
The helicopters and rescue workers were sent immediately after the department was informed at 3:42 p.m. Saturday that Taiwan's ill-fated Boeing 747-200 aircraft with 206 passengers and 19 crew, including at least three babies, crashed into the Taiwan Straits, acting Director General of Civil Aviation Norman Lo said.
Lo said the Hong Kong rescue workers were told that Taiwan did not need the assistance and returned to Hong Kong. But Lo also said that the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region will, if needed, give any immediate assistance to the rescue work.
