Jiang on Party Building, West China Development in Chongqing

General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Jiang Zemin has called on efforts to promote Party building, saying that it is the key for China to achieve its reform and development goals.

General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Jiang Zemin has called on efforts to promote Party building, saying that it is the key for China to achieve its reform and development goals.

Jiang, also president of China, made the remarks while on tour in Chongqing Municipality, southwest China, during May 21-25. He visited a number of construction projects, companies and residential quarters in the city.

Jiang, who last visited Chongqing in 1998, was pleased to learnthat the local government has gained development momentum and the people are in good spirits.

Jiang pointed out that some areas in west China have comparatively good industrial, science and technology, educationaland commercial facilities. They should give full play to their advantages to make achievements.

He also called on the locals to try their best to promote ruraldevelopment and increase the income of farmers, with priority given to reducing the financial burdens of farmers.

Unremitting efforts must be made in bioenvironmental protectionand construction for sustainable economic and social development, Jiang stressed.

After hearing a report on the work of the city government, Jiang said the progress and changes in Chongqing indicated that the central government's decision to promote city to a municipality under its direct governance was correct. He urged local leaders to work hard to build Chongqing into an economic center in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River as quickly as possible.

During his tour, Jiang, who is also chairman of the Central Military Commission, met with senior military officers in Chongqing.
