EU Hails US-Russia Treaty on Slashing Strategic Nuclear Arsenals
The European Union (EU) said in a statement Friday that it welcomed the signing by the United Statesand Russia of a major treaty on reduction of strategic nuclear arsenals.
The European Union (EU) said in a statement Friday that it welcomed the signing by the United Statesand Russia of a major treaty on reduction of strategic nuclear arsenals.
The statement said that the EU considers this treaty is a stepforward and a positive contribution to the efforts of the international community in the field of disarmament and non-proliferation. It also hoped that the treaty would be followed byother initiatives to strengthen international security and stability.
U.S. President George W. Bush and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin signed in Moscow Friday the treaty which requires slashing each country's nuclear stockpiles by two-thirds in the coming decade.
Under the newly-signed treaty, both sides will make the largestcut ever in their nuclear arsenals to between 1,700 and 2,200 deployed strategic nuclear warheads, down from the current level of 6,000 each is allowed.
